Sofia José Santos
Biography
Sofia José Santos is an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra (FEUC) and a Researcher at the Centre for Social Studies (CES) of the same university. She holds a PhD in International Relations from FEUC and a Diploma of Advanced Studies in Communication Sciences from ISCTE-IUL. Since 2008, Sofia has been developing research from a critical perspective on the intersection of media and international politics; media, peace, and violence; (de)securitisation processes; political communication; internet and technopolitics; and media and masculinities. She currently coordinates the UNCOVER project as Principal Investigator (together with Júlia Garraio), is part of the PROTEST project team and the COST Action PEACE network, and is a member of the editorial team of Boletim FEUC et al. Since 2016, she has also been an Affiliated Researcher at OBSERVARE of the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa. Her academic career has included co-coordination of the PhD Programme in Democracy in the 21st Century and coordination of the Master's in International Relations - Peace, Security and Development Studies; co-editing the editorial project Alice News; as well as postdoctoral research at OBSERVARE/UAL (2015-2016) and CES (2015). She also served as a researcher and media and communication coordinator at Promundo-Europe (2014-2015). She was a Visiting Scholar at the Flemish Peace Institute, under the research line "Peace and Society," and a Marie Curie Fellow in the Department of Anthropology at Utrecht University. In addition to national and international publications, conferences, and research projects, her work is also marked by active involvement in social movements (such as Academia Cidadã and Cidadãos por Coimbra), participation in international networks (such as EDEN, PEACE, ECREA, MenCare, and MenEngage), collaboration with international think tanks and NGOs such as NOREF, Palladium, and Equimundo, and academic outreach activities. Her work has been recognised and published by national and international academic publishers such as IUC, Almedina, Routledge, Springer, and Emerald, as well as in peer-reviewed journals such as Media and Communication, European Journal of Women's Studies, Contexto Internacional, and Janus.net.
