Lawcus Winter School Roundtable
Sex in canon law: from theological thought to jurisdictional experience
February 6, 2026, 15h30-17h30
Seminário Maior de Coimbra - Library
Part of the Winter School programme ‘Sex between legal knowledges and powers: ethics, aesthetics, politics, and science as mediations of meaning’, this roundtable is dedicated to the place(s) of sex in canon law. It aims to promote reflection on how canonical legal reasoning represents the person as a sexual subject and accesses its meaning through conceptual tools such as conscience, conduct, bond, body, temptation, expectation or responsibility.
Having left traces of its long influence but operating on the margins of secular law, the richness of Christian theological thought underlying the exercise of Catholic ecclesiastical jurisdiction lies, among other things, in the history of its diversity, its debates, divergences and setbacks, the points of convergence and divergence it has experienced, as well as the religious communities that give it meaning or discover meaning in it. The aim of this roundtable is for the discussion among participants to develop around the problems or concerns that, directly or indirectly, are of greatest interest to them and that open broader avenues of research for the cultural study of the normative imagination of sex.
The event is open to the public.
